BLTA T-Rex Junior Champs

The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association holds its annual T-Rex Junior National Championships. Sixty players compete from New Providence. and Grand Bahama. Based on performance a select team will go on to compete in the JITIC Tournament in the Dominican Republic in the 14's and 16's divisions. Regatta in Abaco

The 34th Annual Abaco Regatta is held. The series begins with its first race off Green Turtle Cay on July 4. Races incorporate a mix of Olympic triangular courses and round-the-islands courses. The venue moves to different towns and resorts. The five races are interspersed with awards and lay day parties. Junkanoo Summer Festival

Reminiscent of Goombay Summer, Junkanoo Summer Festival returns to Bay St featuring live Bahamian bands, traditional dances including limbo and fire dances, local crafts, literature, Bahamian foods, pineapple eating and onion-peeling contests and more. Bahamas 36th Independence

In 1964, after decades of debate and legal manoeuvering, Great Britain granted the islands of the Bahamas limited self-government. The Bahamas became a British Commonwealth in 1969 ending the colonial role. The Islands became an independent nation on July 10, 1973.

The Meridian School at Unicorn Village holds The Island Detectives Science Camp for ages 2 -12. Runs June 22 - July 24. Students spend 5 weeks learning about engineering, aeronautics, physics, space and bio-chemistry while they solve weekly cases using science standards. The Public Service Department holds an essay competition as part of the Tenth Annual Public Service Week, open to junior and seniors in high school. Albany Development, with partners, accepts applications for its 2009 scholarship programme. Several general scholarships and one environmental scholarship begins fall 2009, ranging from $2,500 - $5,000 per year per student.
