NAGB Artist Talk

Presented by the National Art Gallery. Artist Talk: The Global Caribbean Series of Artists. Features Bahamian jewelry designer and former Architecture and Fashion Design student, Kim Riedel. After developing an interest in metal she taught herself to design jewelry and has been doing so for several years. Her work has been featured in local magazines and newspapers, and has been exhibited at National Art Gallery and the former Chambers Galler. Eleuthera Pineapple Festival

This four-day celebration features live music, parties, a Junkanoo parade, craft displays, dancing, a pineapple recipe contest, tours of pineapple farms and a pineathalon, a half-mile swim, 3-mile run and 4.5-mile bike ride. Held in Governor's Harbour, Eleuthera. T: (242) 332-2142.

Labor Day

Members of the labor unions and political parties march in a large parade through downtown Nassau in colorful uniforms. Local bands and a few Junkanoo-ers provide music. The TUC-organised march is set to begin at 7:30 am, Windsor Park ending at Arawak Cay for more festivities.

BIFF Big Screen Art Scene

The Big Screen Art Scene kicks off the Bahamas International Film Festival's fifth year. Features a non-traditional auction and celebration at Popopstudios. 51 “Collectors” tickets are available for $250 and each ticket holder will receive a piece of original art at a minimum value of $300. “Aficionado” tickets are available for $25 for the many activities outside of the auction. Participants include Tyrone Ferguson, Antonius Roberts, Jackson Burnside, Stan Burnside, Margot Bethel, Nicole Collie, Claudette Dean, Holly Parotti, Bernard Petit, Livingstone Pratt, and Arjuna Watson. Spanish for "Coming Back", Volver is a 121 minute, R rated multi-award winning film that tells the story of three generations of women who survive the east wind, fire, insanity, superstition and even death by means of goodness, lies and boundless vitality. Film features a story of a woman named Julie who loses her husband and young daughter in a car accident. Julie's attempt to start life anew free of personal commitments, belongings grief and love. Help for Children, a non profit organization, is accepting all books for all ages, to be distributed to local community libraries. "Just Rush" Junkanoo Parade planned in Grand Bahama was officially postponed until Saturday July 12, Independence weekend. Father's Day

Dreamed up by Sonora Smart Dodd Spokane of Washington who thought of the idea while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Sonora wanted to honor her selfless, hard-working Dad. Her father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane on the 19th of June, 1910. In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.
