Ministry of Y & S Sports Summer Camp

Children ages 4 to 15 can have 2 to 3 hours of both swimming and fitness and also learn another sport such as tennis, basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball or soccer. BIFF Launched Youth Documentary Prize

Bahamas Internatioal Film Festival, in assocaition with Ansbacher Bank and BTC, has announced “Reel Life” film contest for youth aged between 10 and 25 to show their documentary film talent on social issues of their choosing. The deadline to create and submit a video is Aug 15. The top prize is $1,000 donated by BTC and recognition during BIFF's festival that runs Dec 4 to 11. BIFF & Popop Studios Film Series

Bahamas International Film Festival and Popop Studios presents a series of free movies until November 26. On July 30, at 7:30 pm, they present “SEEDS”, produced by independent filmmakers Marjan Safinia and Joseph Boyle. The film documents the Seeds of Peace International Camp in Maine. Every summer, ten teenagers learn to coexist with their 'enemies'. The young leaders from four conflict regions meet at the peace camp and for three life-changing weeks, they share their dreams and fears. They learn to listen to opposing views, see beyond prejudices, and respect each other as they yearn for a future based on peace, prosperity and reconciliation. 2nd Mega Malt Phil Smith Basketball

Tournament

Frank Rutherford's Elite Athletic Development Program, along with Thompson's Trading, is hosting the 2nd three-on-three basketball tournament. Funds will benefit Phil Smith's transplant surgery fund and Henry Rolle's Carmichael Youth Program. To be held on the Carmichael Rd basketball courts at 5:30 pm on Fri ancd 10:30 am on Sat. The Open division has a $1,500 prize. The 17-and-under division receives trophies. Registration for teams of four are at Esso gas stations. Annual Fox Hill Festival

The annual Fox Hill Day Festival and Emancipation Day Celebrations, will start on Friday Aug 1 and endi on Fox Hill Day Tues Aug 12. The 174th year of celebrating Emancipation from slavery is named in honor of Eric Wilmott, a prominent community member and Fox Hill Festival organiser for 20 years. Called the “historian” of Fox Hill, Wlimott was honoured with the British Empire Medal in 2007. Opening ceremonies start on Fri Aug 1 at 8:00 pm and end with a Junkanoo rush out and fireworks. Mon Aug 4, National Emancipation Day, at 1:00am is the Emancipation Day Rush out, with all major Junkanoo Groups. In the morning is the Ecumenical Service, and then the annual senior citizens luncheon. Thur Aug 7: a special Town Meeting “Guarding our Heritage” with guest speakers, followed by the Member of Parliament's Fred Mitchell's annual reception. Tues Aug 12: Fox Hill Day celebrations start at 11:00am. The public is invited to programmes by the Baptist Churches St. Paul's, Macedonia, Mt. Carey and St. Marks/ Other festivities include climbing the Greasy Pole; the plaiting of the Maypole and performances by Visage. The Royal Bahamas Police Force Band, the Her Majesty's Prison Band and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Band will aslo attend that week.

Emancipation Day Holiday

This holiday also known as August Monday, celebrates the emancipation of slavery in the British Colonies in 1834. The holiday is celebrated with a Junkanoo Rush out, a day of beaching, sailing, and regattas in New Providence and the Out Islands. In New Providence old slave villages such as Gambier in the west and Fox Hill in the east have their own special celebrations.
