Thanksgiving Holiday

Thanksgiving in the USA is the biggest North American holiday. Bahamians often join in to give thanks but Easter and Christmas are bigger here. The harvest festival is thought to have started with New England pilgrims but the earliest attested Thanksgiving celebration was on September 8, 1565 in Saint Augustine, Florida. According to author Robyn Gioia, a Spanish explorer, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, landed there on Sept. 8, 1565, and celebrated a feast of thanksgiving with Timucua Indians. They dined on bean soup-56 years before before the Pilgrims sat down and shared a meal with natives at Plymouth Rock. (Source: USA Today)
